Most people think American cities are full of crime. As parent you have to keep in mind that this is mostly created by the movie and television industries, the major cities in the US are not more dangerous as the big cities in Europe. Another advantage is that most universities are located in smaller towns.
The universities mostly have their own security, especially on the campus.
